a well path that starts vertical, then is deviated to reach a target before being turned near vertical again to drop through the pay zone.

n: a clamp placed very tightly around a drill collar that is suspended in the rotary table by drill collar slips. Should the slips fail. the clamp is too large to go through the opening in the rotary table and therefore prevents the drill collar string from falling into the hole. Also called drill collar clamp.

a clamp for flush joint pipe. Also any clamp for securing pipe above the rotary table, even when the slips are set.

n: 1. an automatic valve that opens or closes when an abnormal condition occurs (e.g., a pressure relief valve on a separator that opens if the pressure exceeds the set point, or the shutdown valve at the wellhead that closes if the line pressure becomes too high or too low). 2. a valve installed at the top of the drill stem to prevent flow out of the drill pipe if a kick occurs during tripping operations.

n: the volume of liquid extracted from the pipe by a single actuation of the sample extractor. The sum of all grabs results in a sample.

n: the technique used to validate an automatic sampling system.

n: a float moving vertically within a linearly tapered tube and exposing a variable area to the flow. Also called variable area flow meter.

n: a device used to remove sand from the wellbore. It sucks up sand by creating a partial vacuum and traps the sand by closing at the bottom.
