n: any of several substances - usually organic compounds of high molecular weight-that, when added in low concentrations to a bentonite or to certain other clay slurries, will increase the viscosity of the system. See low-solids mud.

n: The material increasing viscosity by adding into the clay slurry.

a drilling additive to increase the viscosity of water based muds gelled with bentonite.

movement of clay particles, usually after partial disintegration of the clay matrix due to absorption of water or reaction to other effects such as ions, velocity, crushing due to overburden, etc.

n: The constituents of a clay that provide its plastic properties. These include kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite and vermiculite.

n: A kind of vermiculite. Converted by goeschwitzite. Used as inertia block agent.

n: A kind of long cylindrical barrel installed with clack valve.

n: a drilling fluid made up mainly of chemical salts, such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, or potassium chloride. Clear brine contains little or no clay or other solid material and is virtually transparent. It is often used when drilling into a producing formation because clear brine minimises formation damage. n: in a reciprocating compressor, the volume between the top of the piston and the cylinder head with the piston at the top of its stroke.
