n: a decimal system of weights and measures based on the metre as the unit of length, the gram as the unit of weight, the cubic metre as the unit of volume, the litre as the unit of capacity, and the square metre as the unit of area. The international system of measurement (SI) is based on the metric system.

In addition to its function of bringing cuttings to the surface, drilling moo cools and lubricates the bit and the drill stem, protects against blowouts by holding back subsurface pressures, and deposits a mud cake on the wall of the borehole to prevent loss of fluids to the formation. Although it originally was a suspension of earth solids (especially clays) in water, the mud used in modem drilling operations is a more complex, three-phase mixture of liquids, reactive solids, and inert solids.
