n: the measure of the density or gravity of liquid petroleum products in the United States;derived from relative density in accordance with the following equation: API gravity at 60ﾰF = [141.5 + relative density 60/60ﾰF] -131.5 API gravity is expressed in degrees, 1 D. API being equivalent to 1.0, the specific gravity of water. See gravity.

the relative density of a hydrocarbon based on a scale of degrees API. Density in g/cc = (141 / (131 +API)).

a fuel oil, normally with high sulfur and high viscosity. API gravity of about 10.5o. Also called Navey Heavy and Number 6 fuel oil.

n: a light hydrocarbon liquid obtained by condensation of hydrocarbon vapours. It consists of varying proportions of butane, propane, pentane, and heavier fractions, with little or no methane or ethane.

the part of the hydrocarbon stream that is a vapor in the formation and condenses to a liquid after being cooled. Normally the volatile condensate has a composition of C5 to C8 and an API gravity of >40.

n: unrefined liquid petroleum. It ranges in gravity from 9. API to 55. API and in colour from yellow to black. and may have a paraffin, asphalt, or mixed base. If a crude oil, or crude, contains a sizeable amount of sulphur or sulphur compounds, it is called a sour crude;if it has little or no sulphur, it is called a sweet crude. In addition, crude oils may be referred to as heavy or light according to API gravity, the lighter oils having the higher gravities.

n: the ratio of weight of equal volume of two sunbstances, one of which is taken as a standard. Water is taken as a standard of comparison for liquids and solids ( specific gravity ). For gas, air is usually taken ,although hydrogen is sometimes used.

n: a double index scale against which a fixed reference pointer may be moved to correct for variations in gravity from a base point computed for water at 60�F. The compensator is marked in both specific gravity and API gravity units.

n: (GSV) the total volume of all petroleum liquids and sediment and water, excluding free water, corrected by the appropriate temperature correction factor (Ctl)for the observed temperature and API gravity, relative density, or density to a standard temperature such as 60�F or 15�C, and also corrected by the applicable pressure correction factor (Cpl) and meter factor.
