n: a large load-bearing structure, usually of bolted construction. In drilling, the standard derrick has four legs standing at the comers of the substructure and reaching to the crown block. The substructure is an assembly of heavy beams used to elevate the derrick and provide space to install blowout preventers, casingheads, and so forth. Because the standard derrick must be assembled piece by piece, it has largely been replaced by the mast, which can be lowered and raised without disassembly. Compare mast.

n: A large load-bearing structure from which the drill string is suspended.

The elevated section of a rig that rises above the substructure and houses the crown block and draw works.

hoisting mechanism on a drilling rig.

n: 1. a device used with mechanical drawworks brakes to ensure that, when the brakes are used, each brake band will receive an equal amount of tension and also that, in case one brake fails, the other will carry the load. A mechanical brake equaliser is a dead anchor attached to the draw works frame in the form of a yoke attached to each brake band. Some drawworks are equipped with automatic equalisers. 2. any device used to distribute force equally on two pieces of equipment-for example, the pitmans on a beam pumping unit.

n: refer toequalizer bar

end of a braided drilling line affixed to the draw works.

n: the beam equipped on the draw works and rope wheel of cable drilling

n: the drive for the draw works drum used when hoisting loads are light.

n: a device that is attached to the shaft of the draw works and used as a power source for screwing together joints of pipe. It is usually located on the drillers side of the drawworks. Also called spinning cathead. See cathead.

n: the derrick or mast, draw works, and attendant surface equipment of a drilling or workover unit.

n: the derrick, draw-works, rotary table and all associated equipment required to drill a well.

typically a well drilling or service unit capable of pulling and running joined tubing.

n: a chain drive powered by the draw works that drives the rotary table assembly;it runs from the drawworks sprocket to a drive-shaft sprocket. The driveshaft sprocket turns the drive-shaft assembly that drives the rotary table.
