one of several low damage, low toxicity, normally high cost brine for special applications. May be one of several formation compounds.

n: a special drilling fluid that contains a salt or an ester of formic acid (formate),which is chemically combined with another element such as potassium or cesium. Formate fluids are very stable at high temperatures and can be made very dense (heavy) without adding weighting materials such as barite.
