n: a device containing a mercury-in-glass thermometer, which may be inverted after the thermometer has reached thermal equilibrium with the oil in which it is immersed. The inversion breaks the mercury thread, disconnecting it from the sensing element and allowing it to run down to the other end of the thermometer stem. The instrument is then drawn to the surface and the recorded temperature, which remains unchanged until the instrument is reset, can then be read.
