n: a formation that absorbs drilling fluid as it is circulated in the well. Lost circulation is caused by a thief formation. Also called a thief sand or a thief zone. thief hatch n: a lidded opening on top of a stock tank. It allows access for measuring the oil level and for taking samples with a device that is lowered into a tank to take an oil sample at any depth. The sample will subsequently be used to determine the quality and sediment and water content of the oil in the tank.
