n pi: a classification of injection wells under SDWA that are related to oil and gas activity. Typically, these wells are used to dispose of produced waters into depleted oil formations below drinking water sources;to inject produced water from production operations back into the producing zone;to inject fluids for enhanced recovery;and to store hydrocarbons.

n: (MIT) a test required prior to initial injection and once every five years thereafter (at a minimum) for certain types of injection wells under SDWA. These tests evaluate the operational integrity of the well so that underground sources of drinking water will not be endangered. EPA defines mechanical integrity as no significant leak in the casing, tubing, and packer and no significant fluid movement into a USDW through vertical channels adjacent to the injection well bore.

n: (UIC) a program developed under SDWA to prevent injection well contamination of underground sources of drinking water. The UIC program divides injection wells into five classes (that range from common septic tanks to hazardous waste injection wells) and establishes specific requirements for construction, casing and cementing, plugging and abandonment, types of substances that can be injected, volume and pressures that can be injected, and mechanical integrity of the well.
