n pi: bacteria that require free oxygen for their life processes. Aerobic bacteria can produce slime or scum, which accumulates on metal surfaces, causing oxygen-concentration cell corrosion.

n pi: bacteria that do not require free oxygen to live or that are not destroyed by its absence. Under certain conditions, anaerobic bacteria can cause scale to form in water-handling facilities in oilfields or hydrogen sulphide to be produced from sulphates.

n pl: a large, widely distributed group of typically one-celled microorganisms. See anaerobic bacteria, sulfate reducing bacteria.

n: Refers to the microbe that makes drilling fluid decrease filtration rate and viscosity due to it can destroy amylum additive.
