The plungers fit with the tubing reduces liquid slippage back through the well fluid and the gas that is propelling it. Plunger lift is used in less than 1 percent of all artificially produced wells. It is particularly applicable, however, in high gas-liquid ratio oilwells or in gas wells with low bonom- hole pressure and low productivity.

n: the first stage of oil production in which natural reservoir drives are used to recover oil, although some form of artificial lift may be required to exploit declining reservoir drives.

a beam lift artificial lift method. Useful for low rate wells (to 1200 BPD) of moderate depth (to 12,000 ft). One of the few lift systems to be able to remove all but a gas gradient of back pressure from the reservoir.

The weight of the rod string and fluid is counterbalanced by weights attached to a reciprocating beam or to the crank member of a beam pumping unit or by air pressure in a cylinder attached to the beam.
