n: a braking mechanism on the drawworks, supplemental to the mechanical brake, that permits the lowering of heavy hook loads safely at retarded rates without incurring appreciable brake maintenance. There are two types of auxiliary brake-the hydrodynamic and the electrodynamic. In both types, work is converted into heat, which is dissipated through liquid cooling systems.
