n: a type of friction clutch that has a metal housing lined with an expandable diaphragm and pads of friction material called friction shoes. The pressure of the expanded diaphragm squeezes the friction shoes against a drum attached to the driving shaft. Friction between the shoes and the drum allows the clutch to engage. See clutch.
