n: a type of engine governor that prevents hunting (an engines speeding up and slowing down as it seeks to run at the speed dictated by the engine governor.) A compensator on the governor anticipates the engines return to its set speed. When an engines speed goes faster than the set speed, the compensator drops the engines rpm;when engine speed drops below set speed, the compensator increases the engines rpm. Normally, engine operators set the compensator to keep the drop small. With a small speed drop, the governor and compensator quickly make the engine go back to control speed. See govemo1;hunting.

n: a surge of engine speed to a higher number of revolutions per minute (rpm),followed by a drop to normal speed without manual movement of the throttle. It is often caused by a faulty or improperly adjusted governor.
