n: (FERC) an independent agency (created in 1977) of the Department of Energy that has jurisdiction over oil pipelines engaged in interstate commerce. With respect to the natural gas industry, the general regulatory principles of the FERC are defined in the Natural Gas Act (NGA),and the Natural Gas Policy Act (NGPA). The FERC also has jurisdiction over wholesale interstate electric rates, hydroelectric licensing, and oil pipeline rates. Its predecessor was the Federal Power Commission (FPC).
