n: a device in an engine against which a cam rotates as the engine runs. As the high point of the cam rotates, it pushes against (lifts) the lifter. The lifter, in turn, actuates a push rod or other device to open a valve or similar device. Sometimes called a cam follower.

n: a tank whose roof rises and falls with the changes of pressure in the tank but does not float on the product stored in it.
