n pi: tongs that are used to start unscrewing one section of pipe from another section, especially drill pipe coming out of the hole. Compare makeup tongs. See also tongs.

(pronounced Iced") n pi: the pipe tongs suspended in the derrick or mast and operated by a chain or a wire rope connected to the makeup cathead or the break- out cathead. Personnel call the makeup tongs the lead tongs if pipe is going into the hole;similarly, they call the breakout tongs the lead tongs if pipe is coming out of the hole. Compare backup tongs.

n: a pipe tong suspended in the dercick, normally on the left of the driller, used when coming out of the hole to break the connection operated through wire line tied to breakout cathead. Inthis operation it is on pin end of joint to be broken. During makeup

n: A clutched, rotating spool that enables the driller to use the drawworks motor to apply tension to a chain connected to the makeup tongs. This tensioned chain, acting at right angles to the tong handle, imparts torque to the connection being tightened.

n pi: tongs used for screwing one length of pipe into another for making up a joint. Compare breakout tongs. See also tongs.
