n: a record of hydrocarbon content in cuttings gathered at the shale shaker;usually recorded on the mud log.

n: the analysis of subsurface formation characteristics, such as lithology, porosity, permeability, and saturation, by indirect methods such as wireline well logging or by direct methods such as mud logging and core analysis.

A portion of the mud is diverted through a gasdetecting device. Cuttings brought up by the mud are examined under ultraviolet light to detect the presence of oil or gas. Mud logging is often carried out in a portable laboratory set up at the well.
