An initial stage of oil that never developed completely into crude. Typical of oil shales.

n: a shale containing hydrocarbons that cannot be recovered by an ordinary oilwell but that can be extracted by mining and processing. The cost of mining and treatment of oil shale is generally too great to compete with the cost of oilwell drilling.

a mudrock or mudstone, composed of a large amount of kerogen or similar deposit, which will yield oil only when refined.
