A compensator on the governor anticipates the engines return to its set speed. When an engines speed goes faster than the set speed, the compensator drops the engines rpm;when engine speed drops below set speed, the compensator increases the engines rpm. Normally, engine operators set the compensator to keep the drop small. With a small speed drop, the governor and compensator quickly make the engine go back to control speed. See govemo1;hunting.
