a pulley (sheave) or set of pulleys, mounted in a housing. The blocks on a rig are the crown (stationary) block at the top of the derrick and the traveling block.

n: a device mounted near the drawworks drum to keep the driller from inadvertently raising the travelling block into the crown block. A probe senses when too much line has been pulled onto the drum, indicating that the travel block is about to strike the crown. The probe activates a switch that simultaneously disconnects the drawworks from its power source and engages the drawworks brake.

n: Refers to the end of the drilling line which is not reeled on the hoisting drum of the rotary rig. This end of the drilling line is usually anchored to the derrick substructure and does not move as the traveling block is hoisted, hence the term dead line.
