n: (EVE) on tubing, casing, or drill pipe, the thickening at each end of the joint such that the internal diameter of the joint is not affected;i.e., it remains uniform throughout the joints length. Only the outside diameter is enlarged at each end. Pipe is thickened, or upset, at each end to increase its strength so that threads, couplings, or tool joints may be attached. n: (lUE) an extra-thick inside wall on the end of tubing or drill pipe at the point where it is threaded to compensate for the metal removed in threading. Unlike external upset drill pipe, which has the extra thickness on the outside, drill pipe with internal upset has the extra thickness inside and a uniform, straight wall outside.
