n: a primary cementing operation in which cement is pumped into the well in a series of operations or stages. stage separation n: an operation in which well fluids under pressure are separated into liquid and gaseous components by being passed consecutively through two or more separators. The operating pressure of each succeeding separator is lower than the one preceding it. Stage separation is an efficient process in that a high percentage of the light ends of the fluid are conserved.
