In many gas streams, sulfur may be found as volatile sulfur compounds- hydrogen sulfide, sulfur oxides, mercaptans, carbonyl sulfide. Reduction of their concentration levels is necessary for corrosion control and, in many cases, necessary for health and safety reasons.
